Description

The im4MOS has 4 Open Drain outputs capable of switching 3.5A, and up to 40V. It uses two high quality VNS3NV04DP Smart MOSFET chips from ST Microelectronics, each with 2 outputs. All outputs feature current limitation, ESD protection, thermal shutdown and short circuit protection! Outputs also feature 100mJ avalanche energy protection, enabling switching of large inductive loads. Relays are only small inductive loads, and can easily be controlled. The outputs can be controlled by 3.3V or 5V logic signals, making it suitable for any of our Modtronix boards, Arduino, AVR, Microchip PIC or nearly any other project that requires high power Open Drain (Open Collector) outputs. It requires a 5V power supply to power the logic chips and Smart MOSFETs. It will however also work with a 3.3V power supply, but the MOSFET on resistance will be a bit higher (for this to work, supply 3.3V to pin header marked 5V).

This module is designed and manufactured by Modtronix! Only high quality components from reputable suppliers are used! This is NOT a cheap module using no-name components! See “High Quality Components” section below for component details.

Each MOSFET input has a logic buffer, ensuring the MOSFET inputs are switched with 5V even when the control input is only 3.3V. The on resistance of the MOSFET gets lower the higher the voltage on it input is. Without the input logic buffers, the MOSFET input would only be at 3.3V when using 3.3V logic to control the outputs. This will work, but the MOSFET on resistance will be higher.

The 4 outpus, and 2 “V+” outputs are available via a 6 pin, 3.5mm Terminal Block connector. The two pins on either end of the connector (V+) can be configured via two solder jumpers on the board to be either 5V or Vx (voltage on Vx pin). The centre pins are marked 2 to 5, and are the 4 MOSFET outputs that are controlled by inputs 2 to 5.

To use this board to control 5V loads, do the following:

  • Supply 5V power to the pin header pins marked 0V and 5V
  • Ensure solder jumper marked 5V on front of board is made, and solder jumper marked Vx is open!
  • Connect + side of load to one of the V pins (on either side of terminal block connector)
  • Connect – side of load to one of the outputs, marked 2 to 5 on the terminal block connector
  • Load can now be powered by suppling a 3.3V to 5.5V signal to corresponding inputs 2 to 5 on the pin header
  • IMPORTANT! Ensure control inputs of all unused outputs are tied down to 0V!

To use this board to control 5V to 40V loads, do the following:

  • Supply 5V power to the pin header pins marked 0V and 5V
  • Supply the load power to the pin header pins marked 0V and Vx
  • Ensure solder jumper marked Vx on front of board is made, and solder jumper marked 5V is open!
  • Connect + side of load to one of the V pins, located on either side of terminal block connector(is connected to load V+)
  • Connect – side of load to one of the outputs, marked 2 to 5 on the terminal block connector
  • Load can now be powered by suppling a 3.3V to 5.5V signal to corresponding inputs 2 to 5 on the pin header
  • IMPORTANT! Ensure control inputs of all unused outputs are tied down to 0V!

The im4MOS has two rows of standard 2.54mm (0.1″) pin headers. The rows are 0.7″ apart, allowing this module to be mounted on a breadboard or standard 0.1″ grid prototype board. The picture to the right shows some iMod modules mounted on a standard prototype board.

The pin headers supplied or soldered to this board are selected in the “Header Type” option at the top of this page.

Loose 3, 4 and 6.0mm Pin Headers

Two unsoldered(loose) Pin Headers are supplied with the board for free. The pin(mating) length is 3.0, 4.0 or 6.0mm. The number of pins depends on the iMod board. For most boards two 1x6 pin headers are supplied.
- Select 3.0mm if module is going to be soldered into place.
- Select 6.0mm if module is going to be plugged into standard 8.5mm high Female Socket.
- Select 4.0mm if module is going to be plugged into low profile 5.7mm high Female Socket.

3.0mm Pin Headers

Pin headers with 3.0mm long pins are assembled. Select this option if the module is going to be soldered into place. The picture on the right shows an example of an iMod module soldered onto a main board.

Header size (2 to 8 pin) depends on iMod board. Many boards will get a 2 pin header on one side, and a 4 or 5 pin on the other.

4.0mm Pin Headers

Pin headers with 4.0mm long pins are assembled. Select this option if the module is going to be plugged into a low profile 5.7mm high female socket (2.54mm grid).

Header size (2 to 8 pin) depends on iMod board. Many boards will get a 2 pin header on one side, and a 4 or 5 pin on the other.

6.0mm Pin Headers

Pin headers with 6.0mm long pins are assembled. Select this option if the module is going to be plugged into a standard 2.54mm female socket.

Header size (2 to 8 pins) depends on iMod board. Many boards will get a 2 pin header on one side, and a 4 or 5 pin on the other.

Round Swiss Pin Headers

Two 6 Pin headers with Round (Swiss) style pins are assembled. Select this option if the module is going to be plugged into female Round (Swiss) Sockets. This is very useful for prototyping! See picture on the right for some examples.

Typically the 6 pin female socket (low profile version) can be used for the main board.

Press-Fit Headers

Press-fit type pins are assembled. They can be pressed into 1.00mm holes on a 1.6mm thick (standard PCB thickness) target board. A press-tool might be required for production assembly. Once fitted to the target board, the board is very secure, and can not be removed by hand any more. The picture on the right shows an example of an iMod module mounted onto main board via press-fit connectors.

Code Examples

Using with Netcruzer boards that have iMod ports

Many of our Netcruzer boards have iMod ports. This board can be plugged into any available iMod port. The outputs are controlled by setting pins 2 to 5 of the iMod port. The following is some sample code showing how to turn output 2 on and off if this module is mounted in iMod port 1. VERY important to note that all ports should be configured as outputs, and 0V outputted to unused channels.
